Pressure-fit or hardware-mounted?
The location decides. Hardware-mounted gates screw into the wall or banister and are the only appropriate choice at the top of stairs — a pressure gate can be dislodged by a determined lean, and at the top of a staircase that's not a risk worth taking. Pressure-fit gates suit doorways and hallways: no drilling, easy to relocate, quick to remove when the season passes. Measure your opening carefully and add extensions as needed for a tight, wobble-free fit.
Fitting and using gates well
A gate is only as safe as its installation. Check the latch engages firmly every time, re-tension pressure gates regularly (they loosen with use), and never climb over a gate yourself — children copy everything. Gates suit roughly six months to two years; once a child can open or climb one, it's time to retire it and rely on teaching instead.
